automated publishing of timely data: fact publisher
The Challenge
A mutual fund firm needed to move information from Excel, WORD and other external data sources to both the web and to print on a weekly and monthly basis. They had multiple authors and multiple reviewers in the process, with a need to publish the information within ten days of the time it was received. The manual process the firm was using created published data within 40 days of receipt, and repeated attempts to reduce that turnaround time had failed.
The Solution
Simplexity developed Fact Publisher, a single program that publishes
the information to both HTML for the web and to QuarkXpress (or Indesign)
for print. A single review process is used and one person can publish
to both programs. This has reduced the turnaround time to the required
10 days, and has given the data producers confidence that correct information
is always published.
Lessons Learned
There are many programs available that will publish to the web, but
most of them are very complex and expensive because they try to solve
too many problems. There are very few programs that will publish
to print, because of the peculiarities of print layouts and designs.
Much of the challenge in a project like this is to define all the data
sources carefully, reduce redundancy and create a predictable support and change
structure.
