analyzing and developing an intranet

The Challenge

A financial services company needed to deploy more efficient and timely communications technologies to thier employees. They decided to bring Simplexity in to design, architect, and launch an intranet. The existing IT infrastructure was based on Microsoft technologies, but the Web site and other Internet applications were Unix-based. It could be both difficult and contentious to decide which technology to move forward with, not losing track of what the intranet was for—better company communications and morale.

The Solution

Simplexity worked with the firm to evaluate the alternatives. The benefits and risks of various options were discussed, with the most important factor being the security and support environments. Microsoft ASP.Net was chosen as the implementation technology; the authorization and authentication environments were integrated with what already existed. Although content management systems were evaluated, it was decided that simple, web interfaces into administrative functions would be adequate.

Simplexity worked collaboratively with the firm's internal design group to extend branding to the new intranet.

Lessons Learned

It is easy to get caught up in arguments about technology, but ultimately, it is how to service the customer that really counts. Part of that service is not only having relevant and timely content, but being able to quickly fix problems when they happen. Content management systems seem like attractive solutions, but can be constraining.
