“unsticking” a web project

The Challenge

A business unit managing more than $100B at a multi-national bank needed to develop a web site and associated applications for its key users. The business unit was fairly new, but already had influential supporters and detractors from multiple organizations within the bank. Previous efforts to get the project off the ground had failed, even though it was obvious that something needed to be done.

The Solution

Simplexity identified key stakeholders and involved them in negotiating and articulating the solution. With Simplexity's help, the client's project team identified relevant information, transactions, and publishing processes the entire business unit could support. At the end of the process, the bank had a set of functional specifications for the project and a clear path forward.

Lessons Learned

Many times projects become bogged down by cross-organizational conflicts and evolving business needs. Players change and project schedules become delayed. Hiring an outside consultant to facilitate a well-designed business and specifications process can help mobilize a project. In this case, the project had been stalled for five months. Simplexity’s work was completed in less than half that time.

Outsourced project managers add tremendous value to internal web development initiatives. An outside project manager is not burdened by conflicting priorities, so the project receives adequate and priority attention. Cross-organizational conflict can never be eliminated, but if identified early in a project, can be managed effectively.
